Gastropub in Cheshire

"The Fishpool Inn" in Northwich, England, is a renowned pub located idyllically on the edge of the enchanting Delamere Forest, distinguished by its blend of traditional charm and modern gastronomy. It is part of the family-run Nelson Hotels group and has established itself as one of the most popular gastro-pubs in Cheshire. The building, a lovingly restored sandstone house from the 18th century, exudes rustic character while offering contemporary comfort, making it a perfect retreat for locals, hikers, and day-trippers alike.

Traditional British restaurant

The atmosphere at the Fishpool Inn is unique and inviting. Inside, you’ll find cozy corners with crackling fireplaces providing warmth in the winter, while the open kitchen offers a glimpse into the culinary craftsmanship of the chefs. The decor is inspired by the traditional leisure activities of Cheshire – from fishing to polo – and combines historical elements like Victorian tiles with modern accents such as vintage beer barrels used as seating. In the summer, the experience extends outdoors: a picturesque terrace with a beer garden offers a place for relaxed hours in the fresh air, surrounded by the stunning landscape of the forest. The restaurant is also dog-friendly, making it particularly appealing for pet lovers.

Dog friendly restaurant Northwich

Culinary offerings at the Fishpool Inn place a strong emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients featured in a seasonally changing menu. A highlight is the "Sunday Roast," a traditional Sunday meal with juicy meat, crispy roast potatoes, and a rich gravy, perfectly embodying the British classic. Equally popular are the homemade pies, such as the "Steak and Ale Pie," containing tender beef in a savory beer sauce, enveloped in buttery puff pastry – a dish that promises warmth and enjoyment. For pizza lovers, there are authentic Italian varieties baked in a Woodstone oven, like the "Margherita" with fruity tomato sauce and creamy mozzarella. For dessert, the "Knickerbocker Glory Banoffee Sundae," a sweet creation of bananas, toffee, and ice cream, captivates with its opulent presentation.

Local ales at Fishpool Inn

The drinks menu is just as impressive, featuring a wide selection of local real ales that reflect the region’s brewing tradition. This is complemented by a selection of fine wines that pair perfectly with the dishes, as well as a range of refreshing soft drinks for non-alcoholic enthusiasts. Particularly popular is the "Afternoon Tea" option, served with freshly baked scones, clotted cream, and a variety of small treats, making it a delightful experience for guests seeking a traditional British affair. The bar itself serves as a central meeting point, contributing to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

A nice place for family or friends gathering to have a meal together. Somewhat expensive I would say for the food they offer. Some dishes are perfect, but some dishes are over fancy and far too expensive for what they are and focus more on presentation rather than quality and value. Therefore it can come across to being somewhat pretentious. Having said all of this, I would still go back, purely because of the atmosphere and the space, but not as often as I would have liked to.

Love it here, they do the best roast dinners and the staff are always so nice! We asked to move to a preferred table and it was no hassle at all, highly recommend!

Came for Sunday dinner. It was gorgeous but just one item missing - CAULIFLOWER CHEESE😭. It’s hit and miss whether it’s included as standard at places but it wasn’t even available as a side. Gutted. The dinner lacked gravy but this is available upon request. Carrot & swede mash was amazing, the mash, cabbage, roasties and yorkie p was nice. Beef 50/50 - part of it was lovely, the other half was very chewy. Really nice overall but not the best place I’ve been for Sunday dinner.

Called in on the off chance of getting a table. We had a dog so didn't expect to get one, especially as it was a Saturday. The staff could not have been more accommodating and made us feel so welcome. They spoilt our elderly dog, who absolutely loved every minute! The food was amazing. We had starters and mains and both were incredible. Will definitely be going back soon.

We really enjoyed our food here. There were 8 of us in our party and one of the turkey meals had dried up meat. This was resolved immediately and a fresh plate of food was brought out. Personally I found my chosen dishes to be delicious. I had salmon roulade for starters and the beef for main. Prices are on par with other restaurants in the area. It was very busy on a Thursday night so I would recommend booking in advance.

Been here a few times over last few months, twice with a group of 11. Service is great and the food is even better. All nice and hot too. Can highly recommend the steak and mushroom pie. Visited yesterday and had the Roast Beef Sunday dinner which was fantastic. Everyone in our party of 10 were very happy. Stick Toffee pudding is also highly recommended.
